The
North Waterfront is characterized by brand-new
full-service buildings with views of Alcatraz and the Bay, old
warehouses converted to lofts and businesses, and a growing
theatre and music scene. This area is very popular with young
professionals because it provides immediate access to the downtown
Financial District, excellent shopping along the piers, and
some of the best restaurants in the City. Historically an area
of canneries and storage warehouses, the Waterfront got its
first residents after the 1906 earthquake and fire, when people
moved into this area and stayed after the city was rebuilt.
