The
Embarcadero Center is an urban sprawl of landscaped
plazas, patios, walkways and bridges that connect four slim,
modern towers and cover almost eight square blocks. The center,
as well as the four surrounding high rises, was designed by
John Portman and Associates in 1982. Since that time three more
buildings have been added. In all, the center houses more than
120 stores, cafe's and restaurants that are arranged in a comfortable
setting. The center's design is user-friendly, and the outdoor
spaces are well conceived.
Although the Embarcadero is mainly commercial in scope, the
boulevards linking the various buildings that make up the complex
are studded with sculptures by contemporary artists of international
renown.
