The Castro

The Castro, technically known as Eureka Valley, occupies a small but vibrant area of the city that spills across Market Street into the Upper Market area. Since the 1970's, the Castro has been the center of San Francisco's dynamic and politically powerful gay community. For a number of years Castro Street hosted one of the nation's largest Halloween celebrations.

For area shopping, Castro Street offers a variety of boutiques selling everything from jewelry, clothing, leather goods, health foods, hamburgers and coffee.
